Winter on My Mind

Oooooooooooooooooooooooo!  I’m sew excited!  I just ordered Harris Tweed for my eldest daughter’s winter dress coat.  I just have this thing about my girls having a proper dress coat for going out in the winter when dressed nicely.  I just h.a.t.e. seeing my girls in pretty dresses and a ski jacket.  :(

Anyways, I’ve been wanting to order Harris tweed for years.  I thought I’d been lucky enough to purchase some off ebay a couple of years ago, but it turned out to be “Harris tweed-like” tweed – not the real thing.  Well, I did make a car coat and skirt from it – I couldn’t NOT make something, considering it’s purple and green plaid – two of my very favourite colours, combined, no less!

But back to Hannah’s dress coat.  I’m going to make it with Burda 9726.

I’ve already made this coat four times for her over the years.  It’s such a flattering cut and easy to put together.  The first time I made it was with a wool/cashmere mix for my 8 year old.  I was trying to make her a coat out of the remaining fabric from a previously made winter coat for my youngest daughter from Vogue 8864 (you can read my review of the Vogue pattern here).

The pictures look just horrible – sorry about that!  I gave up trying make my kids into little models, so I just photographed it on the hanger! The second winter version of this I made was out of a fancy Italian wool coating that my mother had purchased years ago.  I’d made her an outfit, and there was enough left over to put this coat together again for Hannah last winter.

I used a faux fur in a silver mink.  It was the WORST faux fur I’ve ever used in my life, although it sure looks beautiful!

I’ve also made it out of pink silk linen lined in chocolate brown for a spring-summer weight coat for her.

And out of a lovely piece of Armani remnant that I found at my favourite fabric shop here in Toronto called L.A. Fabrics.

Anyways, I’m going to make it yet again in a wonderful minty green Harris tweed from Harris Tweed & Knitwear.  The pattern has a bodice and skirt construction, with the seam around the waist topstitched.  It’s a very classic flattering pattern when on.  I like my girls’ dress coats about mid-calf.  I live in Toronto, and a short dress coat on a blustery wintery day is not very warm for little people.
